Generation Equality:
Uniting Against Gender
-Based Violence
In partnership with UN Women and with the support of the British Embassy “ Addressing the Impacts of Gender-Based Violence in Kosovo and Empowering Survivors to Overcome Stigma and Speak Out” project was designed to shed light on gender-based violence and encourage survivors to speak up while also motivating bystanders to take action. Recognizing the importance of education and awareness, the initiative engaged students from five schools across five municipalities—Prishtina, Dragash, Gjakova, North Mitrovica, Gjilan—as well as students from the University of Prishtina’s Sociology Department. Through a series of interactive workshops, participants deepened their understanding of gender-based violence, learning about its various forms, the social and psychological impact on survivors, and the role they could play in prevention and advocacy.
Equipped with this knowledge, students went on to develop their own awareness campaigns. These campaigns took different forms, ranging from visually striking posters and stickers placed in frequently visited public spaces to large-scale murals and art exhibitions that conveyed powerful messages about the realities of gender-based violence. Some students chose to express their advocacy through short films, capturing personal narratives and shedding light on the issue from different perspectives, while all schools also created digital campaigns, leveraging social media to reach a broader audience.
Beyond the grassroots efforts led by students, the project also included a national digital campaign aimed at amplifying the conversation on gender-based violence. As part of this campaign, two survivors bravely came forward to share their personal stories, bringing raw and honest testimonies to the forefront. Their voices were amplified through a series of videos, where influencers also played a crucial role in calling for action, urging individuals to recognize the signs of abuse, speak up, and report incidents.
To mark the culmination of the project and in honor of International Women’s Day on March 8th, a conference was organized to showcase the impact of both the student-led and national campaigns. The event provided a platform for youth to share their experiences and insights, with a dedicated panel featuring students who had played an active role in designing and executing awareness campaigns. Their stories of engagement, creativity, and determination offered a compelling testament to the power of youth activism in addressing social issues. In addition to the youth panel, experts in the field took part in a thought-provoking discussion on Gender-Based Violence Activism and Policy Change, exploring the systemic challenges and potential solutions to strengthen prevention and response mechanisms.
This project empowered young people to become advocates for change, equipped communities with the knowledge and tools to recognize and confront gender-based violence, and created a lasting impact through education, dialogue, and action. By bringing together survivors, youth, and experts, this project fostered an environment where gender-based violence is no longer ignored or tolerated but actively challenged, making way for a future built on awareness, empowerment, and collective action.
